A can of cola could also be described as a refreshing beverage that will excite your taste buds and satisfy your thirst. The same product just described differently.
Many small business struggle to find the words to describe their services. How many bookkeepers describe themselves as “keeping a record of monies coming into and out of your business” or “find a list of our satisfied customers for our bookkeeping and payroll services”. That’s OK, but what does it tell you they’ll do for you? How would it sound if they said “We’ll look after your books so that you have more time to spend on your business”? Or even, “Let us provide you with the reports that you need to understand how your business is performing”?
People won’t visit your website so that they can learn all about you and how wonderful you are. They’ll visit your website to find out what you can do for them. Whether you’re selling them a service or your selling them a product, you need to tell them what benefits your business is going to bring to them as customers. Whether that means for them as a business or them as a consumer – tell them what’s in it for them.
Don’t forget testimonials, they’re great! They’ll give potential customers a flavour of what your customers think of you. But don’t just rely on them to tell potential customers what you’re product or service will bring to them. Too many websites have loads of testimonials that are unverifiable and often so anonymised that they don’t really tell you anything. If you’re going to include a testimonial make sure it is verifiable.
